Paul's serves a 1/2 pound burger that is so thick that it requires a metal dome to be placed on top during cooking on the griddle. The neon in the window asks "when is the last time you had a really great burger No, a really great burger". Burgers are also cooked to order with a variety of specialty toppings including various cheese types like cheddar, monterey jack or mozzarella, and bacon, chili, and mushrooms.
The prices are a bargain compared with other restaurants and we encourage you to support this small business which is located just a few doors down from the East Village gas explosion site on Second Avenue. They are open but can only be accessed from one direction (St. Mark's Place at 2nd Ave) as the barriers near 7th Street are in place while the police investigation is ongoing.
Photo is from 2001 and appears in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York" as a long fold-out with all of the other stores which were on this stretch of the block. #savenyc #eastvillage #food #burger
