FREE JANE'S WALK this Sunday at 1pm. St. Mark's Comics in the East Village.

St. Mark's Comics in the East Village has been in business since the 1980s. Mitch Cutler has owned the #comic shop with its extensive stock of highly collectible back issues since 1984. It also has a great selection of #toys, action figures and graphic novels. We love that this small #comicbook store has survived despite the many changes this block on St. Mark's Place has undergone. #storefront #superman #spiderman #xmen #eastvillage #savenyc

We will be leading a special FREE Store Front:The Disappearing Face of New York 1 hour walking tour of the East Village this Sunday, May 3rd at 1pm for Jane's Walk. Jane's Walk is a global "movement of free, citizen-led walking tours inspired by Jane Jacobs." The New York City walks are sponsored by the Municipal Arts Society and are free of charge to everyone. We will be visiting the locations of many other small mom-and-pop storefronts as well as remembering ones that have disappeared. We will be discussing the fact that many of these small businesses are closing in the face of modernization, gentrification, and conformity and that the unique appearance of this vibrant neighborhood suffers in the process. Our starting point will be in front of St. Mark's Church in the Bowery at 131 East 10th Street at 2nd Avenue at 1 pm.

Pavilion Theatre, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

The Pavilion Theatre is a former single screen movie palace that was divided into a nine-screen multiplex theater. It was originally known as the Sanders Theatre when it opened in 1928. It will close soon to make way for a new high-end apartment building development with a proposed smaller space set aside for a new theater showing independent and art-house films.  (Photo from our book NEW YORK NIGHTS)

Store Front walking tour of the East Village and Lower East Side sponsored by the Municipal Art Society of New York

We had great weather today for our Store Front walking tour of the East Village and Lower East Side sponsored by the Municipal Art Society of New York. We visited nearly 20 small independently owned businesses and were able to sample foods from many of them as well.

Stopping at Casey's Rubber Stamps in the East Village where hundreds of varieties of handmade rubber stamps are made using real rubber and maple wood:

Outside of Gem Spa on Second Avenue which has been in business since 1940 and still serving authentic New York egg creams (with no eggs or cream)!

Moishe Perlmutter of Moishe's Kosher Bake Shop on Second Ave. in the East Village supports #saveNYC and shows us love for the photo of his store, taken in 2004, for our book, "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". The original signage was taken down the other week after it sustained damage following the gas explosion. Moishe hopes to re-install it after necessary repairs are made. Thank you to everyone who joined us on our Store Front walking tour of the East Village and Lower East Side sponsored by the Municipal Arts Society of New York. #mas_nyc #bakery
Moishe generously gave out free baked goods to the fireman who were working at the East Village gas explosion site as they searched for survivors.

Carbone, Greenwich Village

Carbone is an Italian-American restaurant on Thompson Street in Greenwich Village, which opened in 2013. Chefs Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi took over the space where Rocco Ristorante operated for close to 90 years. The third-generation owner Anthony DaSilva told us when we interviewed him for our book "New York Nights", that he"lost the space because his landlord raised his rent from $8,000 a month to $18,000 a month."
Although we are sad to see Rocco closed after so many years of serving #Italian food in the Village we are happy that the original #neonsign was repurposed for Carbone instead of being thrown away like many other #neon signs which have disappeared from NYC.

Fishs Eddy on Broadway in the Flatiron district, NYC

Fishs Eddy on Broadway in the Flatiron district has been in business since 1986. This store sells unique and affordable #dishware and #glassware, utensils, flatware in fun and #vintage styles. We love the historic building the shop is located in and the window display featuring a Paint-By-Number kit and serving tray inspired by this 1950s art phenomenon.
The staff are super friendly and even welcomed our large dog, Hudson, inside the store and gave him treats. Hudson ended up selecting an adorable dog treat jar for himself and managed not to knock any #dishes or #mugs over with his tail. We also noticed that they had a section in the back of the store with #used /vintage items. #storefront #flatiron #nyc #americana #insta_america_americana

STORE FRONT Walking Tour this Sunday April 26th 2PM for the Municipal Art Society of New York.

J.Baczynsky aka East Village Meat Market has been in business for over 50 years. It was founded by Julian Baczynsky, a Ukranian immigrant, who specialized in making homemade kielbasa, which is still made today in the back of the store where they also have a smoker, which smokes the meat for 4-6 hours over hardwood. Photo is from 2003 and appears in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York".

We will visit this store and many others as we lead a Store Front walking tour of the East Village and Lower East Side on Sunday, April 26th at 2pm sponsored by the Municipal Arts Society of New York. @mas_nyc The cost is $20/$15 Members We will visit some of the remarkable #momandpop #storefronts documented in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York" and "New York Nights" and remember those that have disappeared. The Infamous Shack, ‎Brooklyn, NYC

The Infamous Shack in ‪#‎Brooklyn‬ was an independent ‪#music‬ shop specializing in Hip-Hop, R&B, Reggae and Blues. On a poster in the window was written "No. 1 Mom & Pop Store Rockin' Since 1970." We loved all of the handwritten ‪‎signs‬ like this one in the window and the posters taking up every inch of space. We also loved the ‪‎hand painted sign‬ with the tribute to the Notorious B.I.G. With ‪‎record store‬ day past we wanted to remind everyone to keep supporting their local independent ‪#record‬ store.

Andrew Diakun, son of founder Roman Diakun, in front of Stage Restaurant, holding flyers for the petition he has organized to help Stage to Reopen

Andrew Diakun, son of founder Roman Diakun, in front of Stage Restaurant, holding flyers for the petition he has organized to help Stage to Reopen on www.change.org.
https://www.change.org/p/stage-restaurant-to-reopen
Andrew told us that Stage, which has been in business for the past 35 years, was served eviction papers by its landlord, who has maliciously and falsely accused Stage of engaging in siphoning of gas. You can see a full statement about the allegations and their response to it on their Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Stage-Restaurant/179865982039609
We told Andrew that we are a big fan of Stage and love their food and Andrew told us that he is also a big fan of our photography and loves our book, "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York" which has a photo of Stage taken in 2001 with its original hand-painted sign.

Via Della Pace, East Village, NYC and NEW walking tour info!

Via Della Pace in the East Village has been in business for 13 years. It is located on East 7th Street near Second Avenue, right near where the East Village gas explosion/fire occurred so it was forced to close for five days following the explosion as police blocked off the street. Owners Marco Ventura and Giovanni Bartocci lost a great deal of business and although they have now reopened, they are worried that the noise and dust from the nearby site, will affect their business in the future as they have an outside seating area.

We encourage everyone to support this small business and we will visit it and many others on a special Store Front walking tour that we will be conducting in less 2 weeks. Please join us as we lead a tour of the East Village and Lower East Side on Sunday, April 26th at 2pm sponsored by the Municipal Arts Society of New York. @mas_nyc The cost is $20/$15 Members We will visit some of the remarkable #momandpop #storefronts documented in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York" and "New York Nights" and remember those that have disappeared. Broadway Candy, NYC

Broadway Candy was an old-fashioned New York candy store, which functioned as part ‪#‎newsstand‬ and part lunch and soda fountain shop. It sold everything from newspapers, magazines, stationery, school supplies, ‪#‎candy‬, bread, cigarettes, soda, cigars and ‪#‎beer‬. People would stop in on their way to work with their kids before dropping them off at school and buy penny candy for the kids and newspapers and ‪#‎coffee‬ for themselves. Kids would go after school to buy soda fountain drinks and candy. There are not too many of these classic stores left these days, replaced by modern convenience stores like 7-11. We love the variety of products on display in this ‪#‎store‬ and you can see from the price of ‪#‎cigarettes‬ how old this 35mm film photo is.

Black Gold in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn

Black Gold in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn is a record, coffee and antique store all in one. They serve great #coffee and #cookies and #muffins and have a unique assortment of #records that are rotated regularly. The #store also has a collection of #antiques and even some taxidermy for sale. We love the #handpainted signage in the window and the bench outside to sit and have coffee and people watch on Court Street.

Stage Restaurant, East Village, NYC.

Stage, which specializes in Ukranian/Eastern European food, has been in business since 1980 but has been closed since a few days after the East Village gas explosion/fire because a tenant living in the building where Stage Restaurant is located called Con Edison stating that he/she smelled gas in their apartment.
As a precaution/safety measure, Con Ed shut off the gas supply to the entire building. There is now a petition started by Stage owner, Roman Diakun's son, to collect signatures and help generate support to reopen the restaurant.
You can find and sign the petition here:

Help Mariann Marlowe Rebuild Enz's Rockabilly Store!

Here is our photo ENZ's before the blast/fire.
From Bowery Boogie: Enz’s Rockabilly store at 125 Second Avenue is located right next door to the fallen buildings (in most of the photos of the wreckage, you can clearly see the black awning and hot pink storefront). The shop suffered severe damage and had no fire insurance. Friends have started a fundraiser for owner Mariann “Micky” Marlowe, a fixture in the neighborhood since the late 70s, so that she can try to rebuild the store. Enz’s started as a punk rock clothing haven, attracting the likes of Lou Reed and Debbie Harry. As the store moved around the East Village, it drew local musicians, artists, burlesque performers, and many other fans who sought something unique. (Aside from her own designs, Enz’s also carried lines of clothing and accessories created by small businesses in the US.)

Here's the link for donations: http://www.youcaring.com/emergency-fundraiser/help-mariann-marlowe-rebuild-enz-s-rockabilly-store-/328544#.VRYMIQ1VuNg

EV Grieve also mentions: Meanwhile, as The Lo-Down first noted yesterday, owner Mariann Marlowe is operating a pop-up shop at 103 Allen St. just below Delancey through next Wednesday...

The Donut Pub on West 14th Street has been in business since 1964.

It is a family-owned shop which is open 24 hours a day. The manager, Sam told us that, "Our donuts and muffins are made fresh daily around the clock. There are no preservatives or additives just flour and sugar and stuff." Business has declined at the ‪#donut‬ shop since St. Vincent's Hospital closed and Dunkin Donuts opened nearby.
They are now celebrating their 50th anniversary with a special Golden Anniversary ‪‎donuts‬ which are glazed in ‪‎yellow‬ frosting with ‪#green‬ stripes. We love how this ‪‎storefront‬ glows at night especially the ‪‎vintage‬ ‪‎neon‬. Photo and full interview appear in our book "New York Nights".

Himalayan Visions, East Village, NYC

Himalayan Visions is a family-run shop, selling authentic merchandise from India, Nepal and Tibet, which has been in business since 1997. After the Tibetan owners moved to NYC in 1994, they were surprised by the scarcity of goods offered in stores from their native homeland and decided to open this store, selling items including jewelry, mala beads, religious artifacts, statues, meditation supplies.
We encourage you to support this small business which is located just a few doors down from the East Village gas explosion site on Second Avenue. They are open but can only be accessed from one direction (St. Mark's Place at 2nd Ave) as the barriers near 7th Street are in place while the police investigation is ongoing.
Photo from 2001 appears in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York" as a long fold-out with all of the other stores which were on this stretch of the block.

Monday, April 6, 2015

Paul's Da Burger Joint on Second Avenue near St. Mark's Place in the East Village has been in business since 1989.

Paul's serves a 1/2 pound burger that is so thick that it requires a metal dome to be placed on top during cooking on the griddle. The neon in the window asks "when is the last time you had a really great burger No, a really great burger". Burgers are also cooked to order with a variety of specialty toppings including various cheese types like cheddar, monterey jack or mozzarella, and bacon, chili, and mushrooms.

The prices are a bargain compared with other restaurants and we encourage you to support this small business which is located just a few doors down from the East Village gas explosion site on Second Avenue. They are open but can only be accessed from one direction (St. Mark's Place at 2nd Ave) as the barriers near 7th Street are in place while the police investigation is ongoing.

1987 Aston Martin Lagonda, NYC.

The Series 3 Lagonda was only produced for one year with 75 models manufactured. The Lagonda is said to be the most polarizing collectible car you can buy. Its sharp-angled origami styling is a love-it-or-hate-it design. This car averaged 8 mpg. A total of 645 Aston Martin Lagondas were sold in their 11 years of production, and only a small percentage of those are roadworthy today.

Happy Easter from the Egg Shop in the Lower East Side, NYC.

This restaurant almost exclusively serves eggs around the clock. Egg sandwiches, egg salad, poached eggs and other egg dishes all use locally sourced, organic #eggs. What an amazingly simple concept and great #storefront with equally great #sign. We hope the Easter Bunny left some eggs here after filling everyone's baskets!

Moishe's Bake Shop, East Village, NYC. Happy Passover!

Help support Moishe's Bake Shop which is located only a few hundred feet from the East Village gas explosion site on Second Avenue near East 7th Street. The business is open but difficult to access as it is now behind police barriers due to the ongoing investigation of the site. Moishe, the second-generation owner gave back to the community after the explosion and fire by giving out free cookies to fire officials as they searched through the rubble for survivors.

Moishe's Bake Shop has been in business since 1948. This popular East Village kosher bakery is known for its rugelach, hamantaschen, and challah bread, which are baked in house every day. The second-generation owner Moishe told us that the signage is from 1977 when the business moved to this location from Suffolk Street. Photo is from early 2000s when the neighborhood's storefronts were covered with graffiti. A photo from 2004 which appears in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York" is practically devoid of graffiti and in more recent years an ATM has been added to the exterior.

Hunter Of The Sea Fish Market, Astoria, Queens NYC

This Greek-owned fish market is no longer in business. We loved the hand-painted sign with the "Hunter of the Sea" as well as the swordfish neon in the window.
