Astor Place Hairstylists, Greenwich Village, NYC

It is with heavy hearts that we are sharing the news that Astor Place Hairstylists πŸ’ˆ✂️has announced that they will be forced to close at the end of November due to a huge (90%) drop in business since they reopened after the Coronavirus pandemic shutdown of all hair salons. Our friend @newyorknico shared that “barring a miracle, this basement level hair salon for both men and women will end its 73-year run of Astor Place by Broadway. Both James and I have gotten hair cuts πŸ’‡πŸ’‡‍♀️ multiple times at @astorplacehairstylists over the 30+ years we have lived in the neighborhood and hope this small business can be saved!

We are sad to announce that Mooncake Foods on Sixth Avenue at Watts Street in SoHo has appeared to have permanently closed with a for rent sign now hanging in its window. This colorful diner was known for its dumplings πŸ₯Ÿand spicy noodles and other Asian fusion food.

Kiki's, Lower East Side, NYC

In our latest YouTube video we walk around both Bedford Avenue and Berry Street and some surrounding side streets with our dog Hudson and check out all the outdoor dining spots and vintage shops & street vendors.

Full video: https://youtu.be/-4wn8wv64Gw

When we spoke with the 2nd-generation owner Steve he told us that his father named the bar Turkey’s Nest πŸ¦ƒbecause “Turkey” was a word that he always used when introducing someone and it just stuck. Photo from 2009 and full interview with Steve appear in our book “Store Front II-A History Preserved”.

Queens Comfort, Queens, NY

We were saddened to hear the news on @queenscomfort IG feed that this amazing brunch spot on 30th Avenue in Astoria, Queens just permanently closed after over 9 years in business due to “the financial strain of operating with limited outdoor dining” due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Owner, Donald D’Alessio is looking for a new space to reopen in the future but in the meantime you can still support by donating to their GoFundMe page which can be easily found as a direct link in their bio. We will miss his chick n’ waffles and definitely hope that he brings the “Home Sweet Home” neon with him when he reopens!

The Famous Cozy Soup ‘N’ Burger πŸ” on Broadway near 8th Street in Greenwich Village has been in business since 1972 and the menu has stayed pretty much the same except for the addition of some health-conscious items. Our night photo of @thefamouscozysoupnburger with its neon sign aglow is from 2009 & appears in our book “New York Nights” along with a preface written by @newyorknico ‘s father @thedailyheller

Thank you to our friend Wally Koval of the wildly popular Accidently Wes Anderson Instagram account for including our Kickstarter campaign about our efforts to save the historic neon sign at Palomba Academy of Music in NYC forced to close after 64 years

We can’t thank our friend, Wally Koval of the wildly popular AWA Instagram account  Accidentally Wes Anderson, enough for including our Kickstarter campaign about our efforts to save the historic neon sign at Palomba Academy of Music in NYC , which was forced to close after 64 years in business due to the Coronavirus lockdown, in their latest AWA newsletter.

We really appreciate the love and support! To find out more about our Kickstarter which ends in less than 31 hours and to see the rewards you can get for supporting our documentary: http://kck.st/33J4CRY

From AWA: "Founded by the Palomba family in the 1950s, the Palomba Academy of Music has been serving and enriching the Williamsbridge community in the Bronx borough of New York City for more than 64 years.  In addition to being an instrumental influence in their community, the Academy is also known for their historic 25 foot two-color neon signage designed in 1956 by Milton Grauer of the famous Grauer Sign Co. Unfortunately, like many other small businesses, this family run beacon of musical creativity was forced to shut their doors this year.

But as a small glimmer of a silver lining, the ever amazing New York photographers & budding preservationists, James & Karla Murray have taken it upon themselves to save a piece of this historic neon symbol.  A Bronx Native herself, Karla had many fond memories of Palomba Academy of Music - even getting her first keyboard from the neighborhood institution.

In 2010, she and James interviewed the second-generation owner, Michael Palomba and photographed the music school & store for their book "Store Front II - A History Preserved" (Disclaimer: We bought their book...and it's super good) Michael let them in on how he inherited the store from his father when he was only 19 years old. He enjoyed being able to teach students not just about music, but about how important the art was to his life. Throughout his time at the shop, Michael truly embedded himself and the shop into the community by providing free lessons to neighborhood kids who were not able to afford them, and holding regular free concerts & recitals.

Karla & James, in tandem with the iconic NYC neon shop 'Let There Be Neon', are planning to gently remove the porcelain enameled panels from the facade of the building and carefully transport the sign to its new home at the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio - the largest public museum dedicated to signs in the United States.  As they move through the process and the 675 mile journey from the Bronx to Cincinnati they will be filming & compiling what is sure to be a compelling documentary. To make this all a reality, they started a Kickstarter campaign which they have already exceeded their goal. If you would like to be a part of neon history, you can take a peek here! And either way, make sure to take a peek at the other amazing places that they document on their IG every day!"

Frank’s Sport Shop in the Bronx has been in business since 1922

Frank’s Sport Shop in the Bronx has been in business since 1922 & has an amazing #neon sign which was installed in 1949.

Frank’s Sport Shop, a family-owned small business, has recently been in the news because Nike corporation sent an email to the 2nd-generation owner, Moe Stein of its decision to exit a partnership dating back 5 decades as it “no longer aligns with our distribution policy”.

Although @frankssports is NOT in danger of closing despite the slap in the face by Nike, there is a petition you can sign at Change.org to tell Nike that if they abandon small local businesses, we will abandon them.

• WE ALSO NEED YOUR SUPPORT to SAVE another historic NEON SIGN at the Palomba Academy of Music in the Bronx which has been forced to close after 64 years in business due to the Coronavirus shutdown. (Swipe left for 2nd photo of Palomba’s #storefront and neon sign).

Russ & Daughters Appetizers on East Houston Street in the Lower East Side, NYC

Russ & Daughters Appetizers on East Houston Street in the Lower East Side has one of our favorite #neon signs in all of NYC as it not only has gorgeous channel letters in two different colors but the store’s name is also flanked by two neon whitefish in a downward dog pose.

Although the shop itself dates back to 1914, the #neonsign was installed in 1951 and was refurbished by @lettherebeneon in 2008.
