El Sombrero aka Hat Restaurant on the corner of Ludlow and Stanton Streets in the Lower East Side, which was founded in 1984, has sadly permanently closed its doors due to rising costs and staffing issues. It’s not the first time this restaurant known for its inexpensive Mexican food 
and strong margaritas closed (El Sombrero originally closed in early 2014 but later that year reopened after renovations were performed and new owners (Junior and Judy Almonte took over). Our 35mm film photo from 2001 appears in our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York”.
