Pat’s King of Steaks on East Passyunk Avenue in South Philly was founded by Pat Olivieri in 1930. Pat is credited as being the inventor of the iconic Philly Cheesesteak as he first created the sandwich when striving to have something different for lunch (he operated a hot dog stand at the base of the Italian market at the time) and sent his brother Harry for some chopped meat from a local butcher and cooked the meat on his hot dog grill and dressed it with some onions and placed it on an Italian roll. Today, the shop is still family-owned and is run by Frank Olivieri Jr. (Pat is his great-uncle).

We had a chance to visit @patskingofsteaks last week and not only fell in love with its amazing #storefront and #neonsignage but also the friendly staff (swipe left for 2nd photo) and the photos lining the order window area of all the famous people who have dined at Pat’s including Sylvester Stallone whose character in the movie “Rocky” eats a cheesesteak at Pat’s with Tony Gazzo, the loan shark boss.
