Grating horseradish at The Pickle Guys on the Lower East Side. One of the rituals of the Jewish #Passover Seder is the eating of bitter herbs and the horseradish root is traditionally used for the ceremony. At The Pickle Guys, an employee wearing a gas mask grates the roots and places the freshly ground horseradish in glass jars, sold by the pint or quart. Years ago, when this area was heavily populated with Eastern European Jews, many pickle stores existed along Essex Street, but this is the only one left.
