Cafe Central, Vienna

Opened in 1876, Cafe Central, Vienna is located inside the Palais Ferstel. The café served as a meeting place for towering figures of literature, science, and politics including Leon Trotsky, Joseph Stalin, and Sigmund Freud. It is renowned for classic treats like Sachertorte, Apfelstrudel, and traditional coffee specialties like the Wiener Melange.

Caffe Capri in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Caffe Capri in Williamsburg, Brooklyn had the best iced coffee we had ever tasted. It was strong and flavorful! There was nothing better on a hot day to cool you off. Sadly this lovely family-owned #coffeeshop closed in 2015 after being in business since 1974.

We included this photo in our book “Store Front NYC” and also interviewed Joe (the co-owner with his sister-in-law Sarah) and asked him why their iced coffee was so delicious and he told us the secret was that he made ice cubes using espresso, not water…so that when the ice cubes melted, they would not water down the coffee. What a brilliant idea!

The Landmark Tavern in Hell’s Kitchen

The Landmark Tavern in Hell’s Kitchen is one of the neighborhood spots we feature in our new book “Great Bars of New York City” as it is rich in history having first opened in 1868 as an Irish waterfront saloon on the shores of what was then the Hudson River (now 11th Avenue) to serve the longshoremen, merchant seamen and dockworkers along the neighboring piers during a time when the area was densely populated by Irish ☘️ immigrants. Today it retains much of its original interior including its mahogany bar, back bar, tile floors & tin ceiling which were restored in the early 2000s by owners Donnchadh O’Sullivan & Michael Young.

Face Records NYC is one of the most hyper-specialized vinyl record shops in New York City.

Face Records NYC is one of the most hyper-specialized vinyl record shops in New York City. Located on Borinquen Place, it sells a curated selection of rare secondhand and sought after titles by Japanese artists including Masayoshi Takanaka, Tatsuro Yamashita and Miho Fujiwara as well as Japanese pressings of jazz, rock, city,pop, soul, funk, hip-hop and anime soundtracks, often featuring obi strips. Shinichi Takei @shinichi_takei opened this Brooklyn storefront in 2018 but its roots trace back to 1994 in Kanagawa, Japan. Yu Mamiya, @yumamiyavrp, a Japanese beat maker who manages the shop updates the stock regularly with new arrivals from Japan.

Adam Opet at Academy Records, 12th St. East Village, NYC.

Adam who manages this record store is an accomplished visual artist who has added his distinctive ink drawings to Academy's boxes of 45s, which are featured in our book "Vinyl NYC".

“Counter Culture” book signing event at New York City’s EJ’s Luncheonette on the Upper East Side went full retro with a new TV Dinner menu item featuring Salisbury Steak, green beans, mashed potatoes, homemade gravy, cherry pie and an egg cream served in a blue TV dinner tray! 

“Counter Culture” features @ejsluncheonette among 30 of Manhattan’s most beloved diners and luncheonettes with full color photos & insightful text. 

Family-owned EJ’s at the corner of Third Ave at East 73rd Street opened in 1992 and is designed to evoke the look and feel of a 1940s luncheonette with a long curvilinear lunch counter and plenty of booth seating. You can still pick up a copy of "Counter Culture" at EJ's Luncheonette available at the front counter!
