Deep Cuts Record Store, Ridgewood, Queens

Deep Cuts Record Store although small in size carries an eclectic & wide mix of used vinyl & new vinyl in a variety of genres including Latin rock, salsa, reggaeton, classic rock and pop. This Ridgewood, Queens shop was founded in 2012 by Colombian American Brandon Perry & John Allen and is known for its self-described “Warhol Rasta banana” logo & its handwritten dividers, some with cleverly-named categories, helping organize the vinyl swipe.

Mamali, a Georgian cafe/coffee shop by day and cocktail and wine bar by night, took over the historic storefront at 70 Christopher Street which housed the iconic Village Cigars for over 100 years before it closed in 2024.

Stella Maris Bait & Tackle

Stella Maris Bait & Tackle 🐟shop on Emmons Avenue in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn is permanently closed.

This family-owned shop was founded by the Lauro brothers in 1947. The six brothers even built their own docks, piers, bulkheads & buildings along the their land using driftwood they collected from their rowboats.

In addition to selling bait and tackle, Stella Maris also rented out rowboats handmade by the brothers and crafted their own fishing supplies including nets.

We loved this storefront with its vintage Coca-Cola privilege sign and its glass bricks and included our photo of it in our book “Store Front NYC: Photographs of the City’s Independent Shops, Past and Present”.

Pearl Diner, one of New York City’s last free-standing diners has sadly closed its doors after 64 years in business.

Dublin House, on W 79th St in the Upper West Side

Dublin House, on W 79th St in the Upper West Side, is owned by longtime bartender Mike Cormican, who hails from Ireland . It is a great place to have a beer and watch sports. Mets pennants line the bar as Dublin House is known as being a huge Mets supporter.

Dublin House is one of the many bars we included in our book “Great Bars of New York City”.

Satellite Records on the Bowery was founded in 1994 by Scott Richmond and became one of the best spots for DJs, collectors and club regulars to dig for dance music including house, techno, drum & bass, and trance.

Rough Trade, NYC

Rough Trade, the iconic indie record store, which was founded in West London in 1976, has a large shop which opened in 2021 within the Rockefeller Center complex in Midtown Manhattan. 

Rough Trade is one of the fabulous independent record shops which we feature in our new book “Vinyl NYC: 33 1/3 of the Best Record Stores Across All Five Boroughs”.

The Closerie des Lilas, Paris was opened in 1847. Many artists and intellectuals spent time there, including Paul Cézanne, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce. 

The Closerie des Lilas owes much of its artistic popularity to Hemingway, who would write short stories and articles there, but Picasso was introduced to the Closerie des Lilas much earlier in 1905.

Blue-Sun Record Store Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Blue-Sun record store is located in a lofty minimalist space on a side street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Owner Billy Teichen who founded the shop in 2017 “tried to make a space that you want to hang out in and enjoy music.”

Dante, Greenwich Village, NYC

Dante, is featured in our book “Great Bars of New York City” and has a rich history (Anais Nin & Ernest Hemingway as well as musicians including Patti Smith and Bob Dylan were regulars). 

Dante, having served coffee in Greenwich Village for over a century, is best known today for earning the coveted top spot at the annual peer-voted World’s Best bars event back in 2019.

Dune 234 Brussels

Dune 234 was an antique shop in Brussels created by interior designer Muriel Bardinet. The shop was located in Les Marolles, the historic, working-class neighborhood in central Brussels known for its lively daily flea market & antique shops.

Store Called Store is one of the most adorable stores in New York City. This colorful shop which is packed full of vintage toys, kitschy curiosities, novelties, stickers, puzzles...

Since 1884, the Café-Konditorei Fürst has been located in its main house in Brodgasse with a terrace overlooking the Alten Markt.

 Salzburg confectioner PAUL FÜRST created the now world-famous Salzburger Mozartkugel around the year 1890.

The Film Center Cafe was a neighborhood Art Deco-styled bar and restaurant which opened in 1933 directly across from the historic Film Center Building on Ninth Avenue, where many major movie studios including MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) and United Artists edited their films 🎥.
