Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We had such a great time watching the 96th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this morning and wanted to share some of the photos we took of the giant balloons while watching from the public viewing area. Did you know that 1924 is the year that Macy’s held its first parade and 10,000 came out to watch. That number of spectators has now grown to 3 million people! Even though the Parade is synonymous with Thanksgiving, did you know that the first parade was a Christmas event, but Macy’s who wanted to capitalize on the holiday shopping season, switched it to a promotional Thanksgiving Day festivity. Cleverly, merchandiser Fred Lazarus asked President Franklin Roosevelt to move Thanksgiving up a week early. We have the retail giant Macy’s to thank for convincing the President to permanently change the date of Thanksgiving in 1939.

Union Square Holiday Market

Shopping for holiday gifts is now in full swing and a great place to visit in NYC is the Union Square Holiday Market, which is open daily until December 24, 2021. It was founded in 1993 by @urbanspacenyc Eldon Scott & is modeled after Christkindlmarkts in Germany. It features independent vendors and artisans who are all individually selected to mark sure that there are varied offerings. Applicants are even personally interviewed and asked to provide samples of merchandise before being selected.

John Derian Company on East 2nd Street in the East Village, NYC

Yesterday, we posted a video of our visit to the John Derian Company on East 2nd Street in the East Village and the gorgeous but pricey Christmas 🎄 ornaments and handmade decoupage they sell, but did not focus on the history of the building where this shop is located, which definitely deserves a separate post. 6 East 2nd Street just off the Bowery, which just recently sold for 5.8 million dollars on 1/6/22 is a massive 6,420 square-foot four-level loft space steeped in music history. It is where the Ramones played one of their earliest shows in 1975 and where Arturo Vega, the punk band’s creative director lived from the 1970s until his death in 2013. Joey and Dee Dee Ramone often used the loft as their crash pad and the band even signed their first contract on Vega’s coffee table. Arturo Vega also created the Ramones’ iconic eagle logo (swipe left for 2nd photo) and attended all but two of their 2,263 shows between 1974 and 1996. Another interesting fact is that the nearby intersection of Bowery and East 2nd Street was renamed Joey Ramone’s Place and is the most stolen street sign in New York City.

John Derian on East 2nd Street near the Bowery in the East Village is an amazing jewel box of a shop filled with a curated selection of handmade decoupage, ceramic and furniture collaborations and during the holiday season has an amazing selection of gorgeous Christmas 🎄 ornaments including many food-themed ornaments. We recently visited the shop which is transformed into a winter wonderland to see what gorgeous Christmas 🎄 tree ornaments we could find.
