Jim’s Steaks

We just got back from a short trip to Philadelphia, which although there are hamburger spots in Philly, the city is better known for its cheesesteaks!

We visited a few #momandpopshop cheesesteak places and wanted to highlight one of our favorites, Jim’s South Street, as it not only has a gorgeous Art Deco #storefront but also has an amazingly delicious #cheesesteak made with 100% Black Angus beef 🥩.

Jim’s Steaks was founded in 1939 in West Philadelphia but in the summer of 1976, the current South Street location opened and is now currently being run by the 2nd-generation owner, Ken Silver. •

To watch our livestream visit to @jimssteaksphilly where we watched the beef being sliced before grilling and to see our reaction to eating our very first cheesesteak (we also visited lots of other great please shops & historic places) visit our JamesandKarla YouTube channel, see direct link below & in bio and IG story. •

Bridge Café

Today is the 138th birthday of the Brooklyn Bridge as it opened to the public on May 24, 1873. In honor of the Brooklyn Bridge’s birthday we are highlighting the Bridge Café on Water Street (which sits at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge).

Bridge Café was established in 1979 by the Weprin family. The Café sits on the first floor of a historic wood frame building built in 1794 along what was once the East River's western edge. Newell Narme opened a "grocery and wine and porter bottler" in the space in 1794 and since then it has operated under various names as a saloon, boarding house, liquor establishment, and restaurant. Through research conducted by historian Richard McDermott, it was found to be one of the oldest surviving drinking establishments in New York City, continually serving alcohol since 1847 when Henry Williams first  opened a porterhouse at its location.

Sadly, the Bridge Café has been closed since it was flooded during Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.

Photo and full text appear in our book "New York Nights".

B&H Kosher Dairy Restaurant

B&H Kosher Dairy Restaurant on 2nd Avenue near St Mark’s Place was founded in 1938 by Abie Bergson and Jack Heller, when Second Avenue from 14th Street to Houston Street was considered “The Jewish Rialto” due to the large numbers of Yiddish theaters along the Avenue.

We have visited & photographed this lovely luncheonette many times (swipe left for 2nd photo in the 2000s).

The current owners of B&H are husband-and-wife team Aleksandra (Ola) and Fawzy Abdelwahed. Fawzy purchased the restaurant in 2003, and Ola joined him two years later. Both of them are immigrants (Ola a Catholic from Poland and Fawzy a Muslim from Egypt), who not only embrace the neighborhood’s diversity but still offer the same classic Jewish kosher comfort food including latkes, knishes, borscht, blintzes, pierogi, tuna sandwiches and homemade challah bread 🍞.
Yesterday we had a chance to visit @bandhdairy and speak with Ola about how their business has declined since the pandemic (please go and support them as they have been struggling) and we got an amazing store t-shirt & she even gave our dog Hudson some fresh-baked challah bread!

Show World

Show World on Eighth Avenue near 42nd Street in Times Square was opened in 1977 by Richard Basciano and was spread over 4 floors with peep shows, x-rated films, live sex acts, adult books and dvd for sale. This sex emporium remained in business when the “Disney-ification” of Times Square began in the 2000s but finally closed in 2018 when the owner passed away. •

We recently livestreamed an architectural tour of West 42nd Street and visited some of its gorgeous theaters and although we miss the gritty old Times Square in many ways, it is nice to see some of the historic theaters 🎭 restored including the New Amsterdam Theatre with its marble wall sculptures depicting moments from great Shakespearean plays.

Kaufman's Army & Navy

Kaufman's Army & Navy on West 42nd Street near 8th Ave opposite the Port Authority Bus Terminal was founded in 1938 and is one of the oldest military supply stores in the U.S. 🇺🇸 and the oldest in NYC. We love their handpainted signage which the owner told us was commissioned by his mother during the height of the Vietnam War.

Our Photo from 2012 (when the two wooden-heeled Hotchkiss mounted cannons were outside the #storefront) and full interview with 3rd generation owner appear in book "Store Front II-A History Preserved".

• Yesterday, during our architectural tour of west 42nd Street, we visited @kaufmans_armynavynyc and purchased an authentic World War II dog tag customized while we waited for our rescue dog Hudson @hudsonpittienyc as well as a few other fabulous items.

Corner Bistro

Corner Bistro on W. 4th at Jane Street in the West Village is housed in a building which was originally erected in 1827-1828. It has been operating as a bar since before Prohibition.

When we took this photo in 2010 and interviewed the owner Bill O’Donell for our book “New York Nights” he told us that luck and timing was instrumental in his decision to fully purchase the business  (he was initially only a partner in the 1960s) and to change the format of the bistro to sell great hamburgers using a perfect butcher mix for the meat and grilling method.

To this day, @cornerbistrony is still known for its great burgers.

Moondance Diner

Last night before the clouds rolled into NYC we were able to see a portion of the lunar eclipse and our thoughts immediately went to the long-departed Moondance Diner on Sixth Avenue in SoHo, NYC. Moondance Diner 🌙 opened in 1933 and closed in 2007 when the property it was located in was sold to a developer and a boutique hotel was built on the site.
The Moondance with its iconic rotating crescent moon signage was not demolished and instead was purchased by a couple who transported it to Wyoming (at a cost of $40,000) and after renovation was reopened as a diner. Sadly, the diner closed in 2012 due to an economic downturn in Wyoming.

We are not sure what has become of it now so if you have an update please let us know!

Artist Dean Russo painted a custom portrait of our rescue dog Hudson

Today we visited the studio of  super talented Dean Russo @deanrussoart at Industry City in South Brooklyn during their open studio weekend. Dean, painted a custom portrait of our rescue dog Hudson and we live-streamed the amazing reveal and spoke with Dean about his artistic process and journey.

We can’t thank Dean enough as we will treasure the painting forever as he truly captured the essence of Hudson’s joyous spirit. (Swipe left for 2nd photo of Dean signing the canvas & 3rd photo of Hudson’s new portrait hanging on our wall in our East Village studio).

If you would like to commission Dean to paint your portrait (he paints people too) or your pet please reach out to him this weekend as he is having a special 50% off sale on all commissions (for example an 8x10 inch portrait on canvas was $300 & is now $150).

• To watch our livestream visit to Dean at his studio and to also see the work of other amazing artists with studios at IndustryCity including @amitrano_gallery please visit our Jamesandkarla YouTube channel & see direct link below & in bio and IG story.

White Horse Tavern

White Horse Tavern in the West Village has been in business since 1880. It is one of the few wood-frame structures still in existence in New York City.

The historic bar, once a hang-out for dock workers on the Hudson River piers was even open during Prohibition as it was a favorite haunt of Mayor Jimmy Walker.

When we photographed White Horse Tavern in 2010 for our book “New York Nights” we also interviewed the owner (at that time), Eddie Brennan who bought the business in 1967 and later purchased the entire building. Below is an excerpt from the full interview.

“Dylan Thomas was a frequent customer of the bar and often drank in the back room, to avoid the crowds. I remember him as just another customer when I was like 16, 17 years old and I would come into the bar to have a drink with the guys from the pier. I didn’t realize that he was a highly respected writer and poet. Dylan Thomas liked this bar because it was like home to him. He was a Welshman and was used to hanging around working class guys like miners and seafaring people. He would walk down here from the Chelsea Hotel where he was staying at the time. This was the last place he had drinks at before he became ill and died in 1953. The overhanging #neon sign went up some time in the 1940s. I recently had the sign entirely rebuilt because it had been very rusty and shaky.”

In 2019, the entire building was sold by Eddie Brennan with the sale contingent upon obtaining a leaseholder to maintain the century-old bar as is. The restauranteur Eytan Sugarman who leased the space for 15 years took @whitehorsetavern1880 history into account when reopening the bar/restaurant and preserved its rich history.

• We have limited edition signed prints of White Horse Tavern available ranging in size from 11x14 inches through 35 x 48 inches (swipe left for 2nd photo of framed 48 inch print). Please DM us for prices.

J.J. Hat Center

J.J. Hat Center on Fifth Avenue by 31st Street was founded in 1911 and is the last surviving family-owned hat store still in business from the early 1900s when 48 different hat 🎩 shops existed in New York City. Yesterday, we visited @jjhatcenternyc and spoke with the owner, Aida O’Toole and store employee Ligardy  @ligardy_hats about this historic business and what hats 🧢 are the most popular sellers today.

One of the shops most popular selling brands years ago was the Italian Borsalino & they even had a neon “Borsalino” sign installed on their storefront ( photo taken 10 years ago) but in more recent years, the American Stetson brand has been popular and they updated their neon signage (swipe left for 7Th photo of how the #storefront looks today).

• To watch our livestream video visit to JJ Hat Center and to see their huge selection of hats in  every price point and style please subscribe to our JamesandKarla YouTube channel, see direct link below & in bio and IG story.

Joe's Dairy

Joe's Dairy in the South Village was founded in 1977 but was operating as a dairy store called Frank and Al's Dairy for over 40 years prior. It specialized in homemade Mozzarella both regular and smoked flavors, which were made on premises.

In this photo taken in 2008 for our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York", the owner's father is relaxing outside the storefront after having hydrated and marinated sun-dried tomatoes 🍅 which they also sold at the shop.

Sadly this Italian cheese shop closed in 2013, which came as a surprise to many but the owner Anthony had told us in 2008 that "When I am ready to retire, it (Mozzarella making) will probably be a lost art in my family because I have a daughter but I won't allow her to do this. It's a lot of hard work. It's not that a woman couldn't do it, but you have to get up really early and work long hard hours."

Full interview and photo appears in our "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York".

Waverly Restaurant, Greenwich Village, NYC

Waverly Restaurant on the corner of Waverly Place and 6th Ave was founded in 1979 by Nick Serafis and is now run by the 2nd-generation family members including his daughter, Angela.

We love its neon signage and it’s delicious food including classic diner options as well as some Greek specialties.

Today, we stopped by this Greenwich Village old-school diner with our dog Hudson and enjoyed a late lunch in its outdoor seating area. The staff was so friendly and the food we had including homemade minestrone soup 🥣 grilled cheese sandwich and French fries was delicious.

Live Bait, NYC

Live Bait, a restaurant and bar located across from Madison Square Park was founded in 1987.

When we interviewed the co-owner Carolyn Benitez for our book “New York Nights”, she told us that they”took over the space from an old Irish pub. The wood bar and neon signage that says “Bar Restaurant” was installed in 1941 and we decided to keep it because it was very recognizable”.

Sadly Live Bait closed after 31 years in business in 2018 and although the neon signage remained, it was reinvented as a taco and tequila bar called Flat Fix but that too closed during the pandemic and we are extremely sad to report that the storefront stripped of its neon is now home to a Popeyes franchise, which we could not even bear to photograph.

Ellen’s Stardust Diner on Broadway near Times Square

Yesterday was May 4th and in honor of “May the Fourth Be With You” we are highlighting a star 💫 in New York City . Ellen’s Stardust Diner on Broadway near Times Square has been in business since 1987 and is known for its singing waitstaff and its 1950s retro-aesthetic with memorabilia lining its walls. Several alumni of Ellen's Stardust Diner singing waitstaff have even gone on to have successful careers on Broadway and American Idol.

Elegant Woolen & Silk

Elegant Woolen & Silk on Orchard Street was one of many fabric-related small businesses located in the neighborhood which was once the center of the garment industry.

The Lower East Side, which was also the home to many Jewish immigrants, became the center of the garment industry because prior to the development of large garment factories and buildings, many garment manufacturers operated their businesses in small storefronts or even in their own apartments.

We loved looking at Elegant Woolen & Silk as it proudly displayed much of its stock in its large window displays flanking the lobby entrance to the shop. Sadly, this fabric business closed a few years ago when Orchard Street became gentrified and hotels opened up nearby.

Paris Shoe

To continue our highlight of storefronts which had gorgeous “lobby” entranceways flanked with beautifully decorated shop windows, we are sharing our 35mm film photo of Paris Shoe Store on Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This shoe store also had a wonderful terrazzo floor that extended to the “lobby” and a great vintage sign with letters which became a bit askew with age. Does anyone remember this old-school gem with the best customer service including measuring your foot for proper shoe fitting with a Brannock device which measures three important features of your foot: length, width, and arch length. Let us know if you also remember getting your foot measured with one of these devices.
