Since it is back-to-school time for many students, we are posting Hornstein’s Toys & Cards, which was located on Broadway by 156th Street.

When we took this #analog photo in 2004 for our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York” the owner told us that he sold lots of back-to-school supplies including notebooks 📓, pens, and backpacks 🎒 along with toys and gifts. Sadly, stores like this have disappeared from the city as people’s shopping habits have changed, with on line retailers taking much of their business.
