Fares Deli Grocery located on Avenue A near Tompkins Square Park was a typical East Village neighborhood bodega which sold a wide variety of food, soda, beer and nonfood items including newspapers. The word bodega reflects its ethnic connection to Latino areas in New York City, where they are often the only food supply source because of the lack of local supermarkets. In this case, Fares was replaced in 2015 by a more upscale “gourmet” delicatessen as the neighborhood has lots of new development including expensive rental and condo apartments. Photo from 2009 appears in our book “STORE FRONT II - A History Preserved".
