We hope everyone is off to a good start for 2023! To kick off the New Year, we are highlighting one of the oldest continuously operating bars in NYC, McSorley's on East 7th Street by Cooper Square, which has been in business since 1854. Originally, McSorley’s was an all-male Irish ☘️ pub known by its slogan, “good ale, raw onions, and no ladies”. Female customers were admitted to most bars by about 1960, but McSorley’s was the last bar in New York City to admit only men. Despite pressure from the women’s movement, it fought to maintain its exclusivity, which was a common practice established long before the Prohibition. The women presented their case with a lawsuit in 1970, Seidenberg vs. McSorley, that resulted in "McSorley's law", prohibiting sex discrimination in bars, hotels, restaurants, airplanes, golf clubs, and other public accommodations. McSorley's still has the same bar taps, wooden bar, and the same pot-bellied stove since it opened in 1854. It serves just 2 kinds of beer, McSorley's own light and dark.
