Happy New Year 🎊 everyone!

Happy New Year 🎊 everyone! To celebrate we are highlighting the beautifully decorated White Horse Tavern in the West Village, which has been in business since 1880.
It is housed in one of the few wood-frame structures still in existence in New York City. The historic tavern was once a hang-out for dock workers on the Hudson River piers & was even open during Prohibition as it was a favorite haunt of Mayor Jimmy Walker. Writer and poet Dylan Thomas was a frequent customer of the bar and often drank in the back room, to avoid the crowds and White Horse was even the last place he had drinks at before he became ill and died in 1953.

Wishing everyone a very happy and healthy 2023. Thank you so much for following our feed and looking forward to posting more of our storefront photos from NYC and beyond in the new year!

Joss Paper

Yesterday, we were livestreaming our walk around the Lower East Side to highlight some of the wonderful small businesses in the neighborhood and captured this scene of the burning of Joss paper outside a Chinese grocery store. Joss paper also known as incense papers are papercrafts or sheets of paper made into burnt offerings common in Chinese ancestral worship (such as the veneration of the deceased family members and relatives on holidays and special occasions). Joss paper is also used for worship of deities in Chinese folk religion.

Monte's Trattoria

Even though Christmas Day has passed, did you know that Italians traditionally decorate their Christmas trees 🎄 on December 8th (the feast of the Immaculate Conception) but that the tree stays up until the epiphany on January 6th. Italians 🇮🇹 also typically have a big Christmas Eve meal of different fish dishes known as the Feast of the Seven Fishes. To continue our celebration of Italian Christmas, we are highlighting Monte's Trattoria in Greenwich Village which has been in business since 1918. It has been owned by chef Pietro Mosconi and his family since 1983. The it overhanging neon‬ ‪sign‬ is from the 1950s. Pietro told us that when he purchased the ‪Italian‬ ‪restaurant‬ from the original owner he decided to keep the name and ‪#signage‬ because he was so fond of it. We love this ‪vintage‬ sign too, especially the chef holding a steaming bowl of ‪pasta‬. The name "Monte" was shortened from Monteverde, a city in ‪Italy‬ known as the "green mountain". Photo of entire restaurant and full interview with Pietro Mosconi appear in our book "New York Nights".

Watch our video on this best spot to visit at Christmas!

Pete’s Tavern on Irving Place at 18th Street is one of NYC’s oldest continuously operating bar/restaurants and is a wonderful place to visit especially during Christmas. It was established in 1864, and become famous because O. Henry is said to have written the classic short Christmas story “The Gift of the Magi” while dining and drinking in a booth inside the pub. We were lucky enough to go inside and see the gorgeous holiday decorations adorning the historic pub and also showcase the booth where O. Henry sat.

Joe’s Pizza

Joe’s Pizza 🍕was established in 1975 by Joe Pozzuoli at the corner of Bleecker and Carmine Streets. They are known for their classic New York-style thin slices using the best ingredients and serve both slices and entire pies. They expanded to a second location on 14th Street near Union square in 2013. Joe’s Pizza appears in the 2004 Spider-Man 2, with Peter Parker works as a delivery boy but is fired due to excessive delivery mishaps.
