Thank you "We Love New York"!

"On the occasion of the April 2020 newsletter , I had the opportunity to exchange with James and Karla Murray for the Ask a Local section. We quickly got on well. I really like their work as a photographer but also the actions they create to enhance the heritage of New York via m om-and-pop , these small businesses threatened with disappearing, while they contribute to the identity New York neighborhoods."

Thank you peter radley for this beautiful, optimistic poem!

"Lonely Karla"
Lonely Karla wandering
along on her empty way
to find a friend to talk to
she has so much to say
where are the voices now
that once so loud sang out
then we had choices
now we can't go out
should we all walk with you
i know in our hearts we do
no more lonely Karla
we will all pull through

"Photographers James and Karla Murray have made their mark with their famous “Store Front” books, where they photograph mom-and-pop shops and restaurants around New York City and interview their owners. But these businesses, those which are very often the heart and soul of a neighborhood, are being hit especially hard by the current crisis. James and Karla, who are also husband and wife, have been continuing to highlight places offering delivery and takeout and those providing food to healthcare workers. They’ve also been filming the walks they’re taking with their dog Hudson that show just how empty the city has become. Ahead, take tours of a deserted Times Square, Grand Central, Greenwich Village, and the East Village on a typically busy Saturday night."

Photographers James and Karla MurrayWe have been documenting small, independently-owned businesses in NYC for well over 25 years, trying to help raise awareness of their necessity as they truly are the lifeblood of the various neighborhoods of New York City. We are proud to say that during the current state of emergency, many small businesses, including East Village Pizza and Sauce Pizzeria in our own neighborhood of the East Village, have stepped up to help support local hospital workers who are working overtime battling COVID-19 by donating free pizza to them. These pizzerias are asking the public to donate pies in their name and they will match every donation with an additional pie. We can’t think of a better way of New Yorkers coming together during this difficult time.

Although we were really happy to see Joe’s Pizza open for delivery and take away, we could not believe that Carmine Street and all of the surrounding streets near the pizzeria were largely empty. Even the pizzeria had no line outside like usual and no customers ordering takeout inside. Certainly, the NYC COVID-19 Pandemic and State of Emergency has emptied the streets and also vastly affected small businesses including Joe’s.

The cheese pizza 🍕 we ordered for takeaway to help support this family-owned business was delicious!
