La Gran Esquina Barber Shop, Harlem, NYC
La Gran Esquina Barber Shop 💈✂️ in Harlem is aptly named for its corner location in a historic brownstone building. We especially love the #neon hairdryer with the flaming heat 🔥 coming out of it in the window. Analog photo from 2002. #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork

Happy Memorial Day weekend!
In preparation for a #barbecue we are highlighting a great #momandpop shop, Williams Bar-B-Q. Williams Bar-B-Q was in business on the Upper West Side until 2005. It was founded by Harry Williams and known for its chicken 🍗 hot off the spit. We loved its #vintage #neonsign and the 🐓bulb lights #signage. #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork #neon

Good Food Grocery Store in Sunset Park, Brooklyn
There are so many things that we love about this #storefront including the missing letter "D" from the #signage, the #handpainted portion of the #sign, the bubble gum machines outside and even the pay phone. Analog photo from 2005 appears in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York".

Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
@vanleeuwenicecream was started in the Spring of 2008 out of an #icecream truck. They make all of their ice cream 🍦 from scratch in #Greenpoint out of fresh milk 🍼 and cream, cane sugar, pure cocoa butter and organic carob bean. They also make #vegan ice cream flavors. We not only love cooling off with their delicious ice cream but also are fans of their #neonsign!

Emey's Bike Shop, Gramercy, NYC
Emey's Bike Shop in the Gramercy neighborhood has a facade made of zinc, which dates back to around 1900. The former owner of this #bicycle 🚴 shop told us that Time Magazine's initial headquarters were once located at this address. Photo from 2003 appears in our book, "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork

Olden Camera, Midtown, NYC
Olden Camera in Midtown closed a number of years ago but we always wondered what happened to its beautiful #vintage #neonsign. As huge #analog camera fans as well as #typography lovers we would have loved to have saved it! Although realistically it would never have fit into our East Village studio. Photo from 2004 appears in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork

Love Shine on 6th Street in the East Village, NYC
Love Shine on 6th Street in the East Village was recently forced to close after 20 years in business due to a rent increase. They were known for their special handmade bags, accessories and gifts. Luckily the owner, Mark Seamon, is keeping the business alive via their online shop and also hopes to maintain a presence at local craft fairs and markets. #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the movie 🎥 "Saturday Night Fever" starring John Travolta we are posting LENNY’S PIZZA 🍕.
Lenny's #Pizzeria was founded in 1953 and has been run by Frank Giordano and his family since 1983. Lenny’s Pizza became famous after it was used in a scene for the movie where the character played by John Travolta is seen ordering two slices of #pizza from Lenny’s, and eating them “double-decker” style, one piled on top of the other 🍕🍕. We love their #vintage #neon #sign and their pizza is great too! Photo and full interview with 2nd generation owner Josephine Giordano, appear in our book "New York Nights". #storefront #neonsign #saturdaynightfever #johntravolta

Fifth Avenue Record Shop in Park Slope was founded by Anthony Mignonette and has been in business since 1968.
We love its #handpainted #signage and its vast selection of #vinyl. Sadly the #sign, which Anthony told us was installed in 1972 was recently damaged by a windstorm. Many thanks to our friend @foldedsunset who told us that the signage has now been removed. Photo from 2009 and full interview with Anthony appear in our book "Store Front II-A History Preserved". #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork

http://hokkfabrica.com/interview-through-their-lens-new-york-based-photographers-james-and-karla-murray/
"如果眼前有兩張明天出發的紐約機票,你最想和誰立馬出走?想去的地方又是哪裡?也許有人會回答著名的中央公園,或是五光十色的時代廣場,或者是9/11的紀念館。這次「Through Their Lens」專訪的這對紐約攝影夫妻,卻花了近二十年時間,遊走那些快將遺失的特色小店,更攝下它們垂死前的掙扎痕跡"
("If there are two tickets starting tomorrow in New York, you most want and who flew away? Where is the place to go? Maybe someone will answer the famous Central Park, or the colorful Times Square, or the 9/11 memorial. Interview with the "Through Their Lens" interview on the New York photographer, but spent nearly twenty years, walk those who will soon be missing specialty stores, more photographed their traces of dying before dying.")

Trowel & Square Ballroom and the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Harlem.
We absolutely love these two #signs, the #handpainted Thrift Store and the amazing #script lettering of Trowel & Square. This ballroom was once called the Tusken Ballroom and was once used as a meeting place by Malcolm X. Sadly both businesses and #signage are gone as the building was sold in 2014 and the #lettering removed. #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork
