Empire Diner is located inside a 1946 Fodero Dining Car on Tenth Avenue at w22nd Street in #Chelsea.
After surviving a few different ownerships in the past 40 years and being closed completely for the past 16 months, it has finally reopened under new ownership. It has a revamped menu under Chef John Delucie and an updated decor. We haven't visited it yet but will always love it when it had the miniature stainless steel Empire State Building replica on its roof as seen in this photo from 2009 which appears in our book "New York Nights". Prints available if interested please contact us at : jandkphoto@att.net #storefront

Not only is Veselka an amazing restaurant but has also generously provided support of our workshops, "Capturing the Faces and Voices of the Lower East Side's Disappearing Storefronts,"
"Capturing the Faces and Voices of the Lower East Side's Disappearing Storefronts," will be held at the Neighborhood Preservation Center starting this Monday, April 24th. Registration is through Eventbrite.com and although we have reached full capacity of 70 participants, we are accepting people via waitlist.
Veselka, located on 2nd Avenue at 9th Street, was established in 1954 by Ukranian immigrant Wlodymar Darmochal. It was originally established as a newsstand/candy store that also sold soup and sandwiches. Since the 1970s it has specialized in homemade pierogies, borscht and potato pancakes, which 2nd-generation owner Tom Birchard refers to as Ukranian SOUL FOOD! Veselka makes 3,000 pierogies every day, 2,500 potato pancakes every week and 5,000 gallons of borscht every year. There are 4 full-time women who make pierogis every day.

Abandoned barber shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
This is definitely a favorite #storefront of ours even though it hasn't seen a customer in years. Not only do we love the #architecture of the wood and brick facade but also the #vintage broken #barber pole๐ outside and the disheveled blinds in the windows and the American flag ๐บ๐ธ covering the door. We wish would could have visited it while it was open but still admire its understated beauty. #disappearingfaceofnewyork

Society of Mutual Assistance Maria S.S. Di Casaluce in Brooklyn founded in 1905.
Benefit societies are often formed to provide mutual aid to members and are organized around a shared ethnic background, religion or geographical region. ๐ฎ๐น We love this #handpainted #sign and the symmetry in the windows and vents in the #storefront.
