Little Poland, East Village, NYC, in business since 1985

Sadly, this Polish restaurant serving classics including pierogi, stuffed cabbage, kielbasy and potato pancakes has been closed due to the Coronavirus and has not announced when it will be reopening. We not only loved its authentic dishes but also the #neon sign in its window. Many restaurants in the neighborhood have reopened with outdoor seating.

BLOCK DRUGS on 2nd Ave at the corner of 6th Street is a second-generation family-owned pharmacy owned by Carmine Jr. Palermo along with his wife Beth

Second photo is Carmine looking at the two page-spread in our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York” featuring our exterior photo and the interview we conducted with Carmine. Block Drugs originally opened in 1885 but the bold wrap-around neon sign was installed in 1945. Carmine’s father, Carmine Sr. began working here as a pharmacist in 1962 and later bought the business.

Lucien on First Avenue in the East Village was founded by Lucien Bahaj in 1998

This French bistro developed a famous clientele over the years, serving traditional French favorites like escargots de Bourgogne, moules mariniere and Marseille-style bouillabaisse. This amazing restaurant @lucien.nyc now has a few tables outside for outdoor dining as permitted by NYC. We hope this helps these businesses survive during this unprecedented time.

Tony’s Park Barber Shop, Sunset Park, Brooklyn

Tony Garofalo who first began working at this old-school Barber shop in 1964 after arriving from Italy 🇮🇹has decided to finally retire and close his shop. We originally photographed this 💈gorgeous #storefront with its handpainted #signage in 2006 for our book, “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York” and also had the chance to watch Tony at work ✂️. We wish him the best and will always remember watching him cut the hair of a youngster whose father also was a long-time customer of Tony.
