The Chambers Street subway station for the J and Z lines has been voted the ugliest station in the entire New York City MTA system. In our latest YouTube video, we explore the BEST and WORST NYC SUBWAY STATIONS including the massive but filthy Chambers Street station in lower Manhattan (swipe left for 2nd photo highlighting more filth) and the abandoned architectural gem, the old City Hall station.

Photography from our YouTube video "MTA NYC SUBWAY: BEST & WORST SUBWAY STATIONS :CHAMBERS STREET (J)(Z) & ABANDONED CITY HALL STATION" via 6sqft...

 Full article: https://www.6sqft.com/nyc-city-hall-subway-station-tour-history/

"When the New York City subway opened on October 27th, 1904, it was the magnificent City Hall station that served as the backdrop for the festivities, with its arched Guastavino-tiled ceiling and skylights. But by 1945, the newer, longer subway cars could no longer fit on the station’s curved tracks, so it was closed. Today, the New York City Transit Museum occasionally offers tours of the abandoned station, which is how photographers James and Karla Murray were able to capture these beautiful photos. Ahead, see more of the station and learn all about its history."

In our MTA NYC SUBWAY: BEST & WORST SUBWAY STATIONS, we visit both the Chambers Street Station serving the J and Z train lines, which was voted the UGLIEST subway station in New York City and the ABANDONED CITY HALL STATION, the prettiest station in #NYC and the original southern terminal station of the first line of the New York City Subway, built by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) which first opened in 1904.

The abandoned City Hall station also known as the City Hall Loop has not had passenger service since December 31, 1945 although the station is still used as a turning loop for the 6 train on the IRT Lexington Avenue Line. #mta, #subway

We are excited to share the news with everyone that we are working with the Cuttita family to help save their Clover Delicatessen neon signage and possibly the architectural details of the entire storefront.

The Cuttita family, who owns @CloverDelicatessen and recently were forced to close their 72-year-old family business due to many factors including the Coronavirus pandemic, deeply care about their iconic store @cloverdelinyc and its historic neon sign on green porcelain enamel tiles, which is located on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 34th Street.

We will reveal more details as we continue to work on this complicated preservation process.

We just wanted everyone to know that the sign will NOT be scrapped or sold for profit as so many people left comments on our posts and have DM’d and emailed us. It is certainly wonderful to share good news as we realize these past few months have been difficult for so many people.

Old Town Bar on East 18th Street has been in business since 1892 and has been in the same family since the early 1980s.

This stop is also known for the 1,000-foot-long tunnel that connects its station at St. Nicholas Avenue to an entrance on Broadway. Called “Tunnel Street,” this is technically the only underground street in the city."

It is with heavy, heavy hearts that we are sharing the news that Clover Delicatessen ☘️on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 34th Street in Manhattan has permanently closed.

This family-owned @cloverdelinyc has been in the same location since 1957 after being forced to move from its original location from 1948 after Kips Bay Plaza was built.

We always loved its neon signage which wrapped around the corner.

We thought for sure that they would be able to remain open since they are located in a fairly busy neighborhood (pre-Coronavirus) with many residential buildings nearby as well as NYU Hospital and Bellevue Hospital.

We are sure this deli will be missed by many as it was such a gem.

We will truly miss the 3rd generation owner, Frank Cuttita who shared with us why his grandfather named the deli Clover, even though he was Italian!

To find out the reason why, please support our work documenting small independently owned businesses on our Patreon page.

We will be revealing the answer on Patreon. Direct link in bio and IG story. • https://www.Patreon.com/JamesandKarla

Bonus video! We show you the powerful Tropical Storm Isaias hitting the East Village of Manhattan with strong wind gusts and heavy rain.

The wind gusts that Isaias produced, knocked down many trees and large branches and some hit parked cars and businesses, so that is why you hear so many sirens in the background.

Our latest video is live! We walk through the 191st Street Subway Station in Washington Heights, Manhattan to explore New York City's deepest subway station in the MTA system.

Not only is the station the deepest in New York at 180 feet (55 meters) below street level, but it also has as its entrance point a very long "Tunnel Street" pedestrian passageway (1,000 feet long or 300 meters).

After walking the entire length of the graffiti lined tunnel passageway and on the dirty platforms of the 191st Street station, we get on the 1 train and head downtown one stop to visit the 181st Street Subway Station, which also is located deep underground and can only be accessed by four elevators, which notoriously have been labeled as dangerous by residents of New York City.

La Caridad 78, the Cuban-Chinese restaurant on Broadway in the Upper West Side of Manhattan has sadly closed after more than 50 years in business.

Raphael Lee, a Chinese man who had grown up in Cuba 🇨🇺opened this fusion restaurant in 1968. Much of the food was a mix of Chinese and Cuban cooking 🥘 including dishes of fried rice with plantains, Cuban-style roast pork with rice and yucca and pepper steak with black beans and rice. The restaurant was even referenced in an episode of Seinfeld.

The R32 subway car, at over 55 years old, was retired from service by New York City in early 2020 but recently brought back into service by the MTA.

In addition to riding from Bushwick, Brooklyn and over the Williamsburg Bridge into Manhattan, we take a side journey showing you our past explorations of the vast underground MTA subway tunnel system in the Lower East Side. Hudson. Ted’s Formal Wear on Orchard Street sold formal 🎩 clothing for men at a time when the Lower East Side was lined with discount clothing shops.

When Ted’s son, Charles Buchholz took over the shop in 2003, he changed the focus of the store and concentrated the inventory on rock T-shirts and other memorabilia from the Lower East Side’s historic connection with punk and rock and roll.
