We are very sad 😢 to report that this weekend is the last time you can get black & white cookies or any other delicious item from Glaser's Bake Shop.
Herb Glaser, the 3rd-generation owner is retiring and will close his family’s Upper East Side #bakery on July 1, 2018. Glaser's Bake Shop @glasersbakeshop in Yorkville has been in business since 1902. It was founded by John Glaser, a German immigrant, who originally specialized in baking breads but later on added cookies 🍪 cakes 🍰 pies and other sweets. They are known for their delicious black-and-white cookies and their Bavarian pastries and brownies.

Hudson. Fun with PIX 11's Greg Mocker & Karla over at Seward Park (Manhattan), Lower East Side, NYC, just now...
Tonight on PIX11 News (at around 10:15 pm EST) we will be talking about our new art installation "Mom-and-Pops of the L.E.S." with reporter, Greg Mocker. Greg and his camera man interviewed us inside Seward Park with our rescue dog Hudson.
CAFFE VIVALDI in the West Village was named after the Italian composer, Antonio Vivaldi.
Although it opened in 1983, for the past decade it featured live nightly music including jazz and classical or folk. In the mid 1980s it had a significant role along with the radio stations WQXR and WNYC and WNCN in the resurgence of New Yorkers interest in classical music because the owner, Ishrat Ansari, played selections from his vast private collections of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart etc.
Sadly, Caffe Vivaldi @caffevivaldi just recently closed after 35 years in business after a prolonged dispute with their landlord who had tripled their rent. This breaks our heart, because the closure of this space is truly a great loss to the community. That is one of the reasons why we created our new public art installation inside Seward Park, to help raise awareness of the importance of unique small businesses like this one.

"history never ceases to repeat itself. things that are taken for granted eventually vanish, only to become revered with nostalgia. this public installation entitled ‘mom & pops of the L.E.S.’ exemplifies this cycle. it was the vision of karla and james murray, who have worked as photographers documenting the changing streetscape of new york. over the years, they have created many beautiful books which illustrate iconic city stores sadly going extinct."

"LOWER EAST SIDE, Manhattan — An art installation in a Manhattan park called “Mom & Pops of the L.E.S.” is raising awareness of the struggles small businesses face as gentrification comes to New York City.
Photographers James and Karla Murray have been documenting New York City storefronts for years. They say local stores are an endangered species in the neighborhood."
Last night we were live on Fox5 News @fox5ny at 6pm with Alison Morris talking about our new “Mom-and-Pops of the L.E.S.” #storefront sculptural installation inside Seward Park.
The camera 🎥 team captured B-roll at our installation the previous day and we spoke with Alison @alisonmfox5 inside the Newsroom with our 1/10th scale model in view.
We hope everyone enjoyed the segment and can join us for our opening celebration 🎉 for our art installation on Saturday, July 14th at 1pm. We will be talking with everyone about our installation and the inspiration behind it and there will be free pickles at the opening courtesy of @pickleguys.

"This time-lapse video shows iconic "Storefronts of New York" photographers James and Karla Murray installing their art piece "Mom-and-Pops of the LES" in Seward Park. The installation depicts four nearly life-size photos of Lower East Side business that have mostly disappeared--a bodega, a coffee shop/luncheonette (the recently lost Cup & Saucer), a deli (Katz’s), and a newsstand (Chung’s Candy & Soda Stand)."

New York's vanishing mom and pop stores: Gritty photographs show the family-owned neighborhood stalwarts as they battle - and some succumb to - rising rents - DAILY MAIL UK 06.26.18

The Sweet Life on Hester Street just a few steps away from Seward Park (where our #storefront art installation is located) is sadly closing after after 36 years in business.
On a sandwich-board sign outside the candy 🍭 store we saw “last day 6/25/18 Monday.” There are a few reasons why owner, Gloria Farewell is closing the shop, including a hefty water 💦 bill for $4,000 presented to her by her landlord (although they don’t make any of their candy on premises) and the fact that she herself doesn’t work in the store and that much of her old customer base consisting of Jewish Lower East Side residents have now moved away from the area as it has become increasingly gentrified. The news of Sweet Life’s closure hit us especially hard because the very reason why we just installed our “Mom-and-Pops of the L.E.S.” sculpture is to help raise awareness of the importance of mom-and-pop shops to the fabric of the community.

"When you walk into Toby’s Estate Coffee, the smell of freshly brewed coffee hits you immediately. And thanks to the towering roasting machine in the back of the Williamsburgcoffee shop (which roasts about 50 lbs of coffee at a time), the sweet-bitter aroma really lingers."
Hudson. Two of our @kickstarter campaign supporters @sissymuffin and her husband Steve visited our “Mom-and-Pops of the L.E.S.” installation and received their pledge reward of a signed 11x14 inch #storefront print.
We were not only thrilled to meet them in person but honored that they would make the trip from Saskatoon, Canada. We can’t thank them enough for the love ❤️ and support.
We will be mailing everyone’s Kickstarter rewards out as soon as possible so please respond to the survey we sent so that we have your proper mailing address and also kindly let us know if you are located in NYC and/or will be visiting for our opening celebration as we would be happy to arrange to give them to you in person (like we did for @sissymuffin).
Also, we hope everyone can join us for our official opening celebration 🎉 at Seward Park on Saturday, July 14th at 1pm. Our art installation is located in the southwest corner of the park at the intersection of Essex Street and East Broadway.

Our public art installation “Mom-and-Pops of the L.E.S” would not be possible without the help of many people including all of generous Kickstarter campaign supporters, including Brooklyn’s own pizza expert Paulie Gee's and his wife @maryanngee1 who visited our #storefront sculpture today while they were celebrating their anniversary today on the Lower East Side.
We can’t thank them and all of our other friends and supporters enough! Printing on aluminum dibond by Unique Copy Center and Unique Visuals NY •

Mario of Unique Copy Center and Unique Visuals NY in action at Seward Park, NYC, yesterday..
Thank you Fernando and the entire team at Unique Copy Center and Unique Visuals NY for their expertise, professionalism and guidance throughtout the planning and installation. We couldn't have done it without them! Fernando gave us invaluable advice on how to print our near life-size #momandpopsles storefront photos but also fabricated and gorgeously printed them on aluminum dibond panels and coordinated their professional installation.
It is especially fitting that Unique Visuals NY did this work for us because they are a small independent business located in Greenwich Village and thereby not only are we helping raise awareness of mom-and-pop stores but also giving back by supporting a local small businesses.

Despite the extreme heat (91 degrees) and high humidity today, along with 2 friends, John and Kyungmi, we managed to build our entire wood frame so we are all set for the dibond photo panels printed by Unique Copy Center and Unique Visuals NY to be installed tomorrow.
We would love for you to help spread the word about supporting the Kickstarter campaign we created: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1581279891/mom-and-pops-of-the-les-public-art-installation
Our Kickstarter campaign has only 9 hours left and we hope to raise some additional funds (besides the grant money we received from NYC Parks/Uniqlo) to help us cover the high costs of materials, fabrication, installation and general liability insurance for the storefront sculpture. With any additional funds we raise past our Kickstarter goal, we can plan on achieving our longer-term goal for the "Mom-and-Pops of the L.E.S." installation, which is to find a new home for the storefront sculpture after its exhibition period inside Seward Park has ended in June 2019. We hope that the installation will be able to continue to act as an artistic intervention to help raise awareness of the importance of small mom-and-pop stores to the fabric and character of their community.

Thank you Schames Paint & Hardware Supply, Lower East Side, NYC!
M. Schames & Son Paints has been in the same family for four generations. It was founded by Mendel Schames, a Russian immigrant and is now run by father and son, Marshall and Brian Schames. This photo taken in 2004 for our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York” is of their old Essex Street store located directly across the street from Seward Park. Sadly, the Schames family was forced to relocate their business to Delancey Street after the construction of a neighboring condo building destabilized their northern wall. We love their #vintage colorful PAINTS #signage and Brian told us that they wanted to take it with them but their new location is narrower and the sign won’t fit across the #storefront.
We are very happy that this #momandpop business survived despite the forced move and has generously supported our sculptural storefront installation “Mom-and-Pops” of the L.E.S.” by donating paint so we can weather-proof the frame trim and plywood panels that will be exposed to the elements for one year while the installation is on display at Seward Park. We can’t thank Brian and the family enough for their support.

Hudson. Installation fun over at Seward Park (Manhattan), Lower East Side, NYC
Sam Moskowitz of Greenwich Village Society For Historic Preservation and his daughter Tina stopped by, said hello and took this photo.
We are happy to announce that we have all of our paperwork signed and notarized including insurance documents allowing us to officially begin construction of our sculptural storefront installation inside Seward Park this Monday, June 18th. We got a head start yesterday by bringing all of the lumber materials and constructing the base in which the sculpture will lay on.
Despite the extremely hot weather forecast for Monday (92 degrees F) our plan is to build the entire 12 foot x 8 1/2 foot rectangular wood frame, cover it with plywood panels, paint it and if time allows attach our polycarbonate roofing material. We will keep everyone updated on our progress and also take photos to share with you.
If anyone wants to stop by and say hello and take photos of the process, please find us in the southwest corner of the park near the children’s playground. Our rescue dog, Hudson will also be with us lending a paw so you can also say hi to him.

Chinatown Lumber on Division Street in the Lower East Side is a family-owned business located around the corner from Seward Park.
We will be creating a sculptural art installation inside Seward Park beginning on Monday, June 18th, Mom-and-Pops of the L.E.S.", in which we will be installing near life-size photos of four mom-and-pop businesses to help raise awareness of the importance of small businesses to the community. We are constructing the wood frame for our sculpture using lumber and building materials purchased from Chinatown Lumber. This way, we are not only raising awareness of #momandpop stores, but also giving back by supporting a locally family-owned business in the process.

"C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries was established in 1838. It is the oldest apothecary in America. The apothecary is in fact so old that it once sold leeches and opium as remedies. According to legend, the chemists at Bigelow even created a salve for Thomas Edison to treat his burned fingers when he was first developing the light bulb."
C.O. Bigelow is a generous sponsor of "Capturing Faces & Voices of Manhattan’s Neighborhood Storefronts."
“Capturing the Faces and Voices of Manhattan’s Neighborhood Storefronts” is a photography and oral history workshop of the cultural significance of mom-and-pop stores in the borough of Manhattan and the impact they have on the pulse, life, and texture of their communities.
The work-shop culminates in an exhibition of each participant’s work at Underground Gallery at the Jefferson Market Library in Greenwich Village from August 1 – October 1, 2018
Capturing the Faces and Voices of Manhattan’s Neighborhood Storefronts is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. 5 x 7 inch Storefront Postcards printed!
We just received the 5x7 inch postcards we designed and had printed to send our supporters for the “Mom-and-Pops of the L.E.S.” Kickstarter campaign and are happy to share a photo we took of them. We will be personally writing a thank you message to everyone on the back side and since they are printed on very thick card stock, these 5x7 postcards can be framed and displayed.
Thank you so much to all of our backers for the tremendous support we have received and can’t wait to share more progress updates with you as we begin construction of our art installation on Monday, June 18th inside Seward Park on Essex Street at East Broadway.

Photography from our visit to Hell’s Kitchen’s 555Ten for 6sqft...

"A year ago, retired lawyer Andrew Ackerman gave up his long-time home, a 1,300-square-foot duplex in a Philadelphia brownstone, to move to NYC. Wanting to be near his friends, the theater district and art museums, and transportation options, he settled on Hell’s Kitchen, and ultimately found the perfect high-rise apartment in Extell Development’s luxury rental building, 555TEN."
Cup & Saucer photo panels printed!
We were able to see a preview of the 2 dibond panels (measuring 8 feet x 8 feet) printed with our photo of Cup & Saucer, a local Luncheonette/Coffee Shop which sadly was forced to close in 2017 after a huge rent increase. These panels were beautifully printed by the Greenwich Village #momandpop business Unique Copy Center and Unique Visuals NY and will cover one of the four sides of the rectangular wood-frame sculpture we are installing inside Seward Park in the Lower East Side beginning next week. Please note that the panels are covered with a protective film that will be removed once the installation is complete.
We hope our art installation will bring awareness to the importance of local #momandpoples stores are to the community. Please follow us on Instagram @jamesandkarla and on the dedicated page we created for our “Mom-and-Pops of the L.E.S.” @momandpopsles for more updates and previews.

Les Halles, a French Brasserie on Park Avenue South was in business for over 25 years before it closed in March 2016.
We are posting our photo of this restaurant in memory of Anthony Bourdain, as this is the restaurant where he got his start in the industry and worked as an executive chef. We always loved the historic building from 1930 that Les Halles was located in which still had the name Foltis-Fischer (a former restaurant chain). Les Halles became the fodder for Anthony’s breakout hit memoir “Kitchen Confidential”. R.I.P. Anthony Bourdain.

Thank you Culture Trip!
"Mom-and-Pops of the LES will feature four nostalgic storefronts: Cup & Saucer, a coffee shop and luncheonette that closed after nearly 70 years of business in 2017; a bodega, whose facade has been inspired by multiple storefronts that closed across the East Village and Lower East Side; a shuttered newsstand that was once off the Bowery in Chinatown; and an “unbranded version” of Katz’s Delicatessen. “There used to be 50 or 60 delicatessens at the turn of the century,” Karla explains, “and Katz’s is the only one left. So it’s a homage to the delicatessens that have closed since the early 1900s.”"

Show World Center,Times Square area, NYC
Show World Center was one of the last adult entertainment facilities in the Times Square area. The owner, Richard Basciano died in 2017 and now his #peepshow booth/sex toy/dvd headquarters has also shuttered. When we took this photo in 2010 for our book “New York Nights”.

Streetbird Rotisserie in Harlem was founded by chef Marcus Samuelsson four years ago but sadly just shuttered
We not only loved this restaurant’s amazing chicken 🐔 🍗 but also the #vintage #neonsign that @marcuscooks saved from the departed M&G Soul Food Diner that was open on 125th Street for decades. We hope that Marcus brings that fabulous “Old Fashion’ but Good” #signage along to his next restaurant as he announced that there are plans in the works!

Thanks for the help Jen & Mike! More soon...
“Capturing the Faces and Voices of Manhattan’s Neighborhood Storefronts” is a photography and oral history workshop of the cultural significance of mom-and-pop stores in the borough of Manhattan and the impact they have on the pulse, life, and texture of their communities. There will be two separate 2-session workshops held at the Neighborhood Preservation Center in the East Village culminating in an exhibition of each participant’s work at The Little Underground Gallery at the Jefferson Market Library in Greenwich Village from August 1 – October 1, 2018.
The workshops teach how photography and oral history can be tools for public awareness and advocacy. Participants will learn to create their own powerful photographs of neighborhood storefronts as well as record oral histories with shop owners, which communicate artistically and are insightful and moving. Taught by acclaimed photographers and best-selling authors Karla Murray and James Murray.
